What is Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a manual therapeutic system of diagnosis and treatment for a vast range of medical conditions. Osteopaths work with the structure and function of the body based on the original principles set out by its founder, Andrew Taylor Still; that health and well being depends on the whole body working as a unit. The Skeleton, muscles, ligaments, nervous system, organs and connective tissues must work as one and or in conjunction with each other for optimum function.

For our bodies to function well the structure must also work well. Osteopaths work on the basis that structure governs function and vice versa. Your osteopath will aim to restore balance between structure and function, where possible, without the use of drugs or surgery. Osteopathy is a manual therapy, so your osteopath will use a highly skilled touch known as palpation, as well as manipulation, stretching and massage to increase mobility of joints, to reduce tension in certain muscles, to facilitate the blood and nerve supply to tissues as well as the drainage too. By applying this system of treatment and working with your body your osteopath aims to restore complete balance known as ‘homeostasis’ and promote the bodys innate healing mechanisms. In some cases your osteopath may suggest advice on posture and exercise, as well as nutritional and ergonomic advice to further improve health and prevent reoccurrence of your symptoms.

Essentially, your osteopath seeks to find the route cause of your symptom rather than just treating the symptom itself.

Regulation of osteopathy

All osteopaths in the UK are regulated by the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC).

Osteopaths are required to renew their registration each year and the General Osteopathic Council provide registrants with an annual licence to practise. As part of this process, the GOsC checks that osteopaths have current professional indemnity insurance, remain in good health and of good character, and have met mandatory continuing professional development requirements.

Protection of title

The title 'osteopath' is protected by law. It is against the law for anyone to call themselves an osteopath unless they are registered with the GOsC, which sets and promotes high standards of competency, conduct and safety.
